The owners are Louise and Alex Lubchynski who are originally from Beaumont, Alberta. Alex explains their exodus of Alberta," We came back from a vacation in Hawaii to Beaumont in the winter. We went from a tropical paradise to minus 40 below and that's when I decided to move to sunny and warm Kelowna." Alex must work harder than conventional vineyards to weed and tend to the vines without any chemical intervention. The work is difficult but the results are worth it. Alex has sold a large part of his crop to wineries such as Summerhill and Larch Hills.
At 22 years of age their daughter, Alana, is the winemaker at Beaumont. Her hands on experience working at wineries in the Okanagan Valley, Australia and New Zealand are highlighted by the high quality of the estate wines. It is amazing that a young winemaker can craft these organic wines without formal university education for winemaking. Her success comes from years of being mentored by top winemakers and working hand-in-hand with them at their wineries.
The winery only produces about 1,500 cases a year and the wines are well priced so Alex is looking to expand production in the coming years. The wines are sold directly from their tasting room in Lakeview Heights in West Bank, or are available at select private wine stores in the Lower Mainland including the local St Johns Street Liquor Store in Port Moody.
My tasting notes are outlined below and note that these wines cost anywhere from $15.95 to $18.95 which is a great price for Organic wines.
Beaumont Estates, Pinot Noir, 2007 displays classic aromas and bouquet of cherries, spice and vanilla with a touch of earthiness. On the palate fresh raspberries and red berry flavours lead to a well balanced acidity to tannin finish.
Beaumont Estates, Gamay Noir, 2007 is a dark well concentrated red wine revealing rich flavours of plum, raspberry and black cherry. Adding to the complexity of this wine are subtle hints of pepper and dark chocolate.
Beaumont Estates, Pinot Gris, 2008 is a favourite among wine drinkers. This aromatic Pinot Gris has an intense nose of pink grapefruit, peach, pear and lichee fruit. A fruit forward wine with a generous, silky smooth texture that balance wonderfully leading into a crisp, fresh finish.
Beaumont Estates, Gamay Rosé , 2007 is a definitive patio and picnic blush. Rose petals, strawberry, cranberry and tropical fruit fragrances match well with a hint of sweetness on the palate. Fruity and fresh define this classic spring and summer rose wine.
I believe in supporting the organic and sustainable wine movement in the Okanagan, and with the quality of these wines, going green has never been easier.
