The last few weeks of September and October presented the Okanagan with sunshine and warm temperatures. These conditions saved the vintage as the spring and the beginning of summer were cooler than usual according to Summerhill Vineyards winemaker Eric von Krosigk. He added, "...at the end of September the temperature was in the mid to high twenties and the the result was excellent grape quality at harvest".

Perhaps it's climate change but the warmer growing season has resulted in four straight above average vintages. Mission Hill winemaker John Simes remarked that, "A week of above normal weather in September can make up for two to three weeks bad weather in May".

Michael Bartier and the wine team at Road 13 Winery (formerly Golden Mile Cellars) have planted experimental vines in their south Okanagan vineyards. Vines planted include; Mouvedre, Grenache, Roussanne and Tempranillo. Mouvedre and Grenache, two of the workhorse vines grown in Spain, require mild and long frost free growing seasons so Road 13 has planted in the mildest and warmest sections of their vineyards. Tempranillo, the great grape of the Rioja region of Spain, has also been planted but the vines need a few years of growth to produce enough quality grapes to produce commercial wine.  We'll see if these vines will produce quality fruit in the coming years. Michael has also predicted that Shiraz will become the signature wine of the Okanagan in the near future.

All these developments point to a bright and interesting future for the BC wine industry.
