Meet Janice Robinson Minimize

Over her career, Janice Robinson has taken a number of wine courses; but she primarily attributes her extensive knowledge of food and wine to the fact that she spent the majority of her adult life working in and around the hospitality industry.  Starting out managing the accounting for Harbour House Revolving Restaurant, she moved on to become chief assistant to the President of Sysco Konings Foods.  For ten years, she managed The Frog and Nightgown Pub’s private liquor store before opening the Newport Liquor Merchants in 2004 for the Rocky Mountain Hospitality Group.

She has developed a keen interest in the wines of British Columbia since her family’s summer home was on Okanagan Lake.  With an abundance of wineries in the area, how could her taste for wine not improve!

Janice has a deep appreciation for the diverse group of people she has met over the years.  She places a high value on exceptional customer service.  This ethic has earned her the loyalty of many repeat customers at Newport Liquor.  Her excellent working relationship with winery agents and owners has enabled her to procure some of the harder to find wines, be they locally or internationally produced.

Unlike some wines where there appears to be a never-ending supply, B.C. VQA wines do have limited availability.  If the label on the bottle states a specific year, then be prepared to stock up.  A vintage consists of one growing and harvesting season per year.  If Mother Nature is kind and the spring and summer are blessed with good growing conditions, the quantity of grapes harvested in the fall may allow for an abundance of juice, but if growing conditions are not so good, the quantity will not be there.

In past years, we have had the opportunity to purchase some fine B.C. wines, however depending on the harvest, a wine available to us one year may not be available to us the following year, because there just simply isn’t enough to go around.

The most important thing to remember, no matter where the wine comes from, is that a vintage does not last forever, and once it is gone, all we can do is wait for the next vintage to be released and hope that it will be as good as the last.  Alas, it does give us all something to look forward to every year!
