Meet Janice Robinson Minimize

Over her career, Janice Robinson has taken a number of wine courses; but she primarily attributes her extensive knowledge of food and wine to the fact that she spent the majority of her adult life working in and around the hospitality industry.  Starting out managing the accounting for Harbour House Revolving Restaurant, she moved on to become chief assistant to the President of Sysco Konings Foods.  For ten years, she managed The Frog and Nightgown Pub’s private liquor store before opening the Newport Liquor Merchants in 2004 for the Rocky Mountain Hospitality Group.

She has developed a keen interest in the wines of British Columbia since her family’s summer home was on Okanagan Lake.  With an abundance of wineries in the area, how could her taste for wine not improve!

Janice has a deep appreciation for the diverse group of people she has met over the years.  She places a high value on exceptional customer service.  This ethic has earned her the loyalty of many repeat customers at Newport Liquor.  Her excellent working relationship with winery agents and owners has enabled her to procure some of the harder to find wines, be they locally or internationally produced.

The unexpected “snow-globe” effect present in some white wines can be a little disconcerting to some consumers, but in effect you have bought a flawless wine but not an aesthetically flawless wine.  Those little white floaters are commonly known as Wine Diamonds a.k.a. tartaric crystals.  Part of the grapes acid are tartrates (salt), and as the wine ripens these tartaric acid crystals fall out, which is a natural process in the development of the wine.  Although these crystals are not often seen in New World wines, due to a cold stabilization process, Old World wine aficionados seek out these wines as a sign of quality – to them it shows the wine has not been robbed of its structure through unnatural chilling, and has been allowed to age properly.
